The Nobel Prize in Physics is awarded to three researchers for their work on lasers and optics

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced Tuesday that American scientist Arthur Ashkin, Frenchman Gerard Morrow and Canadian Donna Strickland will receive the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018 for their laser achievements.

"The inventions honored this week have revolutionized laser physics," said the academy in a statement announcing the grant of nine million Swedish kronor ($ 1 million).

"Sophisticated precision correction tools open the door to areas of research that have not yet been discovered and to a large number of industrial and medical applications," the statement added.

Earlier, Nobel laureate James Allison and Japan's Tasuko Hongo received the Nobel Prize in Medicine 2018 for their discoveries that led to advances in cancer treatment.

"Allison and Hongo have shown how to use different strategies to discourage the immune system's brakes in cancer treatment," Nobel said in a statement.

According to the tradition of the Swedish Academy, the Nobel Prize in Medicine is the first Nobel Prize awarded each year.
